What is The Robot Needs Home Collective?
The Robot Needs Home Collective is a ‘Full-Stack’ DIY Music Collective formed in 2004. We promote shows, record and release records and provide assistance to bands as either management, a record label or both, depending on their needs. We are part of the creative team behind Leicester’s Handmade and White Noise Christmas festivals and the Great Central arts and culture newspaper.
Founded in 2004 by members of Leicester based band Maybeshewill, Robot Needs Home was originally intended as a record label to release their debut EP. In the following months and years we began working with other artists we loved and over time the label established itself as something exciting in its own right. The Collective now encompasses artists from across the UK and is distributed internationally through The Cargo Collective.
It was natural to be promoting shows alongside everything else we were doing. We specialise in creating events in unusual and spectacular spaces, and have transformed art galleries, churches, museums and cathedrals in to venues for incredible live music. In 2013 we created Handmade Festival with our friends at Firebug and The Cookie. It has grown in to Leicester’s main music and arts festival attracting around 3,500 music fans each year.
What We Aim to Do
Bring exciting and challenging live music to the East Midlands.
First and foremost we aim to bring acts to the East Midlands that audiences might not otherwise be exposed to – whether that’s classical pianists, breakcore DJs, pop acts or hardcore bands – if it excites and challenges us, we want to share it with you.
Create transformative experiences that leave a lasting impression on audiences.
We want our audiences to leave us feeling subtly changed by what they’ve experienced. We all remember those shows that you leave feeling like you’ve experienced something completely new, and we want that for everyone that comes to a Robot Needs Home Collective event. The acts we book reflect that hope, but we tailor our events to the artists we work with and use unconventional spaces where possible to create completely unique experiences.
Support the musical community that we exist within.
We are proudly based in Leicester and that scene has shaped us and helped us to grow creatively. We want to pay that back in whatever ways we can with support, advice, resources and whatever platform we can provide to new artists.
Conduct ourselves in an ethical manner that puts artists and audiences first.
We endeavour to act in the best interests or artists – sharing any profits equitably, supporting their practice and working with them to develop audiences in the city. We believe the audience is just as important as the people on the stage and we will work to make our events more accessible to all audiences through increased use of accessible spaces, concessionary ticketing and other accessibility initiatives on a show by show basis. We have a safer spaces policy in effect at all events, and aim to make them safe and welcoming to all.
